Nowadays, as more and more hotels are entering the market and striving for business, they’re becoming more competitive in pricing and at the same time providing increasingly better service.

We’ve examined all the major hotels in the Providence, Rhode Island area and read a lot of the customer feedback associated with each hotel, and decided on the top picks below. These hotels are reported by lots of satisfied customers as being comfortable and clean, and although some of these hotels don’t come with a lot of luxuries, many have rates that start from below $100/night (I’m talking about the “regular” rates you’ll find on travel sites. You can get even cheaper deals by bidding on Priceline.com).

PROVIDENCE BILTMORE HOTEL – 3.5-star hotel located in the heart of downtown Providence.

Customer Ratings: Hotels.com – 8.6/10, Expedia.com – 3.5/5, Travelocity.com – 4/5, Tripadvisor.com – 3.5/5, Priceline.com – 8/10.

Pros: Great location (downtown providence), staff is polite and helpful, comfortable beds, clean rooms, 42″ or up to 60″ plasma TVs in some rooms. Many people got free upgrades (from standard to suite) so be sure to ask for one when you arrive at the front desk. Over 10 million dollars spent on renovations / room remodelling over the past 3 years.

Cons: Not the safest area to be walking around in at night. Some reports of bad internet connection. Some find bathrooms to be a bit small.

Comments: While this hotel is one of the most expensive ones on this list, it is one of the cheapest that can be found in the heart of the downtown Providence area. If you’re willing to walk or drive a short distance, consider some of the other hotels listed below.

THE HOTEL PROVIDENCE – 4-star hotel located in the heart of downtown Providence.

Customer Ratings: Hotels.com – 9/10, Expedia.com – 4.4/5, Travelocity.com – 4.5/5, Tripadvisor.com – 4/5, Priceline.com – 9/10.

Pros: Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Providence, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable beds, clean rooms, complimentary newspaper.

Cons: No self-parking – need to either park on the street or use hotel’s valet service. Sound-proofing issues reported by some of the customers who could hear sounds from the hallway and adjourning rooms and the streets outside. Advice: Call the hotel ahead of time to ask if any noisy outdoors events are scheduled around the hotel during your stay – for example the downtown music festival which can disturb your sleep.

Comments: While this hotel is one of the most expensive ones on this list, it is one of the cheapest that can be found in the heart of the downtown Providence area. If you’re willing to walk or drive a short distance, consider some of the other hotels listed below.

HOTEL DOLCE VILLA – 3.5-star hotel located 1.2 km from the city center (downtown Providence), which translates into a 10-15 minute walk.

Customer Ratings: Hotels.com – 8.2/10, Expedia.com – 4.2/5, Travelocity.com – 3.5/5, Tripadvisor – 3.5/5.

Pros: Welcoming and polite staff, nice location (Federal Hill). Suite comes with a kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom, as well as a full-sized fridge, stove, oven and microwave. Lots of restaurants and cafes nearby. Most customers find it very clean (with very few complaints).

Cons: Old hotel with no elevator. No on-site parking available (need to pay to park at commercial parking lot). Can get noisy if you have noisy neighbors and also if your window faces the alley (with people talking under your window all night). Some complain about bed not being too comfortable.

Comments: Another good hotel to stay at if you’ll be active in the downtown Providence area but want to avoid the pricey hotels in that area. A 10-15 minute walk will take you to downtown Providence.

Customer Ratings: Hotels.com – 7.4/10, Expedia.com – 3.4/5, TripAdvisor – 3/5.

Pros: Courteous and friendly staff, clean rooms, comfortable beds, fitness centre, free parking.

Cons: Sound-proofing issues reported by some customers. A little far from downtown and is isolated (with not much to do around the hotel).

Comments: Not the highest rated hotel by customers but still a good hotel overall for the low prices they charge. If you need to access the providence downtown area but don’t want to pay for an expensive hotel situated right in the downtown area, and are willing to walk a bit or drive a short distance, this would be a good choice. Alternatively you can take advantage of the $5/day (unlimited trips) hourly shuttle to the downtown area. Tip: ask for a room with the harbor view instead of the highway view (which can get noisy from the highway traffic).

Customer Ratings: Hotels.com – 9.2/10, Expedia.com – 4.3/5, Travelocity.com 5/5, Priceline.com – 8/10.

Pros: Courteous and helpful staff, comfortable beds, clean rooms, modern / urban / trendy décor, free airport shuttle, gym with saunas, free domestic long distance calls, free bottled water, free parking.

Cons: Nightclub down below can get noisy.

Comments: If you need to access downtown Providence but don’t feel like paying for an expensive hotel in the downtown area, and don’t mind the 10-minute drive to and from downtown, this would make a good choice. Tips: Ask for a room with a view of the river. Try to get a room in the upper floors, as far away from the nightclub noise as possible. When visiting for the first time, the hotel can be a bit hard to find – it’s located behind the mall. Be informed that linens are replaced only on request as a way to conserve water (a part of the green program).

1)Priceline.com – Priceline.com has a unique bidding system where you can bid for hotel rooms for up to 50% off regular rates. In most cases, this is the way to getting the absolute cheapest hotel rates available anywhere. The drawback is that you only get to pick the area and the minimal star-rating of the hotel you wish to get, but won’t find out which specific hotel or what amenities are available until AFTER your bid is successful AND you’ve paid for the room. There are bidding strategies you can use to maximize you chances of getting the lowest rate possible. *UPDATE* Please see this post for priceline hotel bidding strategies.

2)Hotwire.com – Hotwire.com has a selection of discount hotel deals where you can truly get “4-star hotels at 2-star prices” (a Hotwire slogan). See this post for more information on hotwire.

3)More Stars Isn’t Always Better – The more expensive hotels may be more extravagant, but will you really be using all of the amenities and services that justify the room cost? In many locations, you can find lower-rated hotels that provide the same level of service and comfort as, or each better service and comfort then, higher star-rated hotels, and at a fraction of the price. Many travel websites have customer reviews written by actual customers that have stayed at the specific hotels. For example, Hotels.com is a popular site with lots of “Guest Reviews”. Read those reviews and make note of the pros and cons, then choose a hotel that’s clean, comfortable, and cheap in price. See our top ten picks on cheap but great hotels in Providence.

4)Compare Prices Across Sites – Also, even rates for the same hotel can differ widely from travel site to travel site, so be sure to compare rates using price comparison sites such as HotelsCombined.com.

5)Book As Part of Packaged Deal – You can save money by booking your flight, hotel room and car rental together as a travel package. However, before going this route, make sure that you actually need the car rental because, although booking the flight and hotel and car together may be cheaper than booking them separately, booking all three will almost certainly cost more than booking just the hotel and flight alone.

6)Consider Less Popular Locations – If you know your way around the area and don’t mind walking or driving a bit to and from the hotel, please consider hotels that are not situated in a popular area such as a city’s downtown area. Considering hotels a mere 10 minutes away can make a big difference in pricing.

7)Travel During Off-Peak Times – Hotel prices fluctuate due to supply and demand, so most often than not, you can get cheaper rates by choosing to travel during off-peak season.

8)Call the Hotel Directly – Some hotels have special promotion deals that they run from time to time that not a lot of people know about, so it wouldn’t hurt to call up hotels directly to ask if they have any current deals available.

9)Talk to Front Desk Personnel – Even after you’ve arrived at the hotel, it may not be too late to save. Ask the front desk if there are current promotions running. Also, sometimes if you ask nicely, some hotels will give you free room upgrades if they have rooms available. Lastly, if you’re staying at a hotel for extended periods of time (for example a week or more), be sure to ask for a discount.

Hotwire listings won’t tell you what the hotel names are, but will tell you the area the hotel is in, the star-rating of the hotel, the price per room, and the amenities available at the hotel. Once you have selected and paid for a deal, the specific hotel name will be revealed.

However, based on personal experience, hotwire‘s prices tend to be more expensive than what you can get by bidding on priceline – that is, if you know how to bid strategically! (See this post to learn how to bid for Providence hotels on Priceline.com.)

If you want the absolute cheapest rates on Providence hotels, you need to check out Priceline.com. It is a site that has hotel deals you can bid for. You will not know the hotel name or which amenities it has when you bid for it, which is why the deals are so cheap. You do get to specify the check-in check-out dates, geographical area, and the minimum star-rating of the hotel when you bid.

This post will outline the basic rules for bidding on priceline, and explain some of the bidding strategies. Be sure to see this other post for step-by-step bidding instructions that are specific to hotels in each area in Providence.

Before continuing, please check out Priceline by clicking here and entering “Providence,RI” as the location and any check-in / check-out dates and click the “name your own price now” button. On the next page, note the various geographical areas in Providence. Also, by clicking to check-mark each area ONE AT A TIME, you can see which star-ratings are available in hotels in each area.

Priceline Bidding Rules

-You can only bid once every 24 hours with the same set of search criteria, i.e. check-in and check-out dates, geographical area, and minimum hotel star-rating. However, by changing any of these criteria, you can rebid immediately after the previous bid is rejected. This can be done multiple times a day.

-Within the same 24 hour period, you can only rebid at a lower rated hotel but never higher. (This is because the rating you specify is the minimum rating. So when you bid for 3-star hotels and up, that includes 4-star hotels. Therefore you can’t rebid at 4-star and up – Priceline doesn’t consider that as a change in criteria.) However, you can bid for 4-star hotels and up first, and when that bid is rejected you can bid for a lower star rating such as 3-star.

-Once you’ve entered your credit card and won a bid, you cannot get a refund or change the dates or hotels. Sales are final – so be careful when you bid!

How to Decide on Your Initial Bid

Let’s say for example you want to bid for a 4-star hotel in the downtown Providence area. First, we need to find out what the regular rates are for 4-star hotels in the downtown providence area. Check Hotels.com and HotelsCombined.com, enter your check-in and check-out dates, and write down the lowest rate of the cheapest 4-star hotel that you can find for this area. Now multiply this cheapest rate by 0.3 and 0.7 respectively to get a bidding range.

For example, the cheapest 4-star hotel rate is $143/night. $143 x 0.3 = $42.9. $143 x 0.7 = $100.1. So the bidding range would be $43 to $100 per night.

Then you’ll need to decide on a starting bid amount that falls in this $43-$100 range. How you choose will depend on how desperately you need the hotel room and how close your travel date is. If you’re only 3 days away from your trip, say, you’ll want to bid closer to $100 to maximize your chances. On the other hand, if you have at least 1-2 weeks to spare, you may want to start with $43 – if your bid gets rejected, just rebid every 24 hours in the worst case scenario that you’re not able to win by rebidding the same day.

Priceline Bidding Tips and Strategies

In order to bid multiple times during a 24 hour period, you can change one or more of the following criteria every time you bid: date(s), minimum star-rating(s), and area(s).

So, if you can be flexible in your travel dates, that would give you more chances to rebid in every 24 hour period. Also, if you’re willing to drive a little bit between your hotel and the sight-seeing areas (or whichever is your destination), you have more areas to bid on which will also allow more rebids.

But what if your travel dates are rigid and you want your hotel to be in one specific area? Don’t despair, because we still have star-ratings to play with. Let’s go through an example.

Let’s say I want a 4-star hotel in downtown Providence. I decided on an initial bid, placed my bid on 4-star hotels in downtown Providence, and was rejected. I could, of course, wait 24 hours, then raise my bid and bid again. Or, I could do this…

I noticed that the star-rating for the “East Providence – Seekonk” area only goes up to 2 1/2, and that both “Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)” and “Coventry – West Warwick” areas only go up to 3-stars. I would use that to my advantage by bidding on downtown Providence area AND any one of the other areas at the same time, while still specifying a 4-star rating. Because the other areas do not have 4-star hotels, I would essentially still be bidding on 4-star hotels in the Providence downtown area, but by adding an area to our bid we’re changing the search criteria, which “bends the Priceline rules” into letting us rebid immediately instead of having to wait 24 hours.

So, say area 1 is “Coventry – West Warwick”, area 2 is “Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)”, area 3 is “East Providence – Seekonk” and area 4 is “Downtown Providence”, I would bid on the following combinations in turn, raising my bid each time by $5-10 (or whatever amount you see fit):

Area 4, 4-star

Areas 4+1, 4-star

Areas 4+2, 4-star

Areas 4+3, 4-star

Then, if the bid still gets rejected, I could bid on 3 area combos as follows:

Areas 4+1+2, 4-star

Areas 4+2+3, 4-star

Lastly, if the bid is still rejected, I would bid on all 4 areas:

Areas 1+2+3+4, 4-star

I could repeat this process for 3 1/2-star hotels in the Downtown Providence area, because the 3 other areas don’t have hotels that go beyond 3-stars. Or, if I absolutely want a 4-star hotel, I would just wait 24 hours and raise my bid and keep bidding until I win.

***IMPORTANT!!!*** There are two things to keep in mind when you use this strategy:

1)Each time before rebidding, you’ll need to close the Priceline browser and reopen a new one. Otherwise some of the areas may get greyed out.

2)You cannot rebid a subset of a previous area combination. For example, you can’t bid on areas 1+2+3 and THEN bid on areas 1+2 or 2+3 or 1+3 because the latter are subsets of the former. The bidding order listed in my example above will work, but if you reverse the order it won’t.

Lastly, please note that although each room you bid for can accommodate 2 adults, they don’t tell you what size bed(s) are in the room. You may get a queen size bed, a king size bed, 2 double beds, etc. If there’s any specific arrangement you want, be sure to call the hotel ahead of time to let them know what you want to avoid unpleasant surprises when you get there.

I’ve already posted Priceline Bidding Rules and Bidding Strategies in a previous post. In this post, I’ll list step-by-step how to bid for hotels in each specific area in Providence that will save you 30-70% off regular prices.

Note: If you don’t want to spend time on learning how to bid on priceline, please click here to see our picks on cheap but great hotels in the Providence area, and/or click here to read about hotwire deals.

(Disclaimer: I cannot guarantee all the steps to be 100% accurate, especially since the priceline site can change at anytime.)
____________________________________________________________________________________
First, open Priceline Bidding Page in a New Browser by Clicking Button Below:

Then, Enter “Providence,RI” into the field “city or airport”, specify your “check-in” and “check-out” dates”, and the number of hotel rooms you need, then click the “name your own price now” button. Then continue with detailed bidding processes below.
____________________________________________________________________________________
Bidding For Hotels in Downtown Providence

1) Determine a bidding range for 4-star hotels in this area, then decide on your initial bid amount. (See this post for a how-to.)

2) Go to the priceline page we opened. Click to check-mark the “Providence Downtown” area, and click to select “4-star Deluxe” hotel rating. Then enter your initial bid in the “Name Your Own Price” field. (Ignore the “retail price” stated by priceline – chances are you’ll be paying a lot less than that.) Continue through the rest of the self-explanatory bidding process.

3) If your bid is accepted, congratulations! If it is rejected, close the priceline browser and click the “Start Priceline Browser” button at the top of this post, and bid again as follows. (Note: we advise closing and reopening the browser after each bid, as sometimes some of the checkboxes would be greyed out otherwise.)

4) This time, select both “Providence Downtown” AND “East Providence – Seekonk” areas, then select “4-star Deluxe” hotels, raise your bid by $5-$10, and bid again. Note that by doing so, you will NOT end up with a hotel in East Providence, because the highest star-rated hotel in East Providence is only 2 and a half but you’ve selected a minimal star-rating of “4-star Deluxe”. So, essentially, we’re still bidding on 4-star hotels in the Downtown Providence area. But by also selecting the East Providence area, we’ve “changed” our bidding criteria which allows us to bid again immediately instead of having to wait 24 hours before rebidding with the exact same criteria. We could do this with other areas in Providence because none of them has 4-star hotels either – you’ll see this unfold below.

5) If your bid is accepted, congratulations! If it is rejected, close and reopen the priceline browser again. This time bid on areas “Providence Downtown” and “Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)”, and “4-star Deluxe” hotels, again raising your bid by another $5-$10.

6) If your bid is not accepted, continue with the following bids in the same manner as above, raising your bid by $5-10 with each bid, until your bid is accepted (reminder: close and reopen the browser after a bid is rejected before rebidding):

Areas “Providence Downtown” and “Coventry – West Warwick”, “4-star Deluxe” hotel

Areas “Providence Downtown” and “Coventry – West Warwick” and “Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)” (3 areas), “4-star Deluxe” hotel

Areas “Providence Downtown” and “Coventry – West Warwick” and “East Providence – Seekonk ” (3 areas), “4-star Deluxe” hotel

All 4 areas, “4-star Deluxe” hotel

7) If after all the bids above you still get rejected, you have two choices. If you insist on getting a 4-star hotel, then wait 24 hours and repeat all the bids above (of course you won’t be starting again with your initial bid – you’ll need to continue raising the bid from where you left off the day before). However, if you can live with a 3 1/2 star hotel, we could keep on bidding right now. You will need to establish a new bidding range and initial bid, this time for 3 1/2 star hotels in the Downtown Providence area. Noting that none of the other areas in Providence has anything as high as 3 1/2 stars, we can bid as follows until a bid is accepted (reminder: close and reopen the browser after a bid is rejected before rebidding):

“Providence Downtown” area only, 3 1/2-star

Areas “Providence Downtown” and “East Providence – Seekonk “, 3 1/2-star

Areas “Providence Downtown” and ”Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)”, 3 1/2-star

Areas “Providence Downtown” and “Coventry – West Warwick”, 3 1/2-star

Areas “Providence Downtown” and “Coventry – West Warwick” and “Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)”, 3 1/2-star

Areas “Providence Downtown” and “Coventry – West Warwick” and ”East Providence – Seekonk “, 3 1/2-star

All 4 areas, 3 1/2-star

8 ) In the unlikely event that your bid is STILL not accepted by this point, you can either wait 24 hours and rebid for 4-star or 3 1/2-star in the Downtown Providence area by repeating the bidding processes above. OR, if you’re willing to settle for a 3-star hotel in Downtown Providence, you can rebid right away with the following (reminder: close and reopen the browser after a bid is rejected before rebidding):

“Providence Downtown” area only, 3-star

“Providence Downtown” and ”East Providence – Seekonk ” areas, 3-star (since the highest-rated hotel in East Providence is 2 1/2-star)

9) Hopefully you’ve gotten a winning bid before this point. If not, you’ll need to wait 24 hours and repeat one or more of the above bidding processes.

____________________________________________________________________________________
Bidding For a Hotel in the East Providence / Seekonk Area

Due to the fact that the highest-rated hotel in this area is only 2 1/2, there’s not a whole lot you can do in terms of changing bidding criteria to rebid multiple times in the same day. Thus bidding process is straight-forward:

“East Providence – Seekonk ” area, 2 1/2-star

“East Providence – Seekonk ” area, 2-star (or wait 24 hours and rebid at 2 1/2 star)

“East Providence – Seekonk ” area, 1-star (or wait 24 hours and rebid at 2 1/2 or 2 star)
Bidding For a Hotel in the Cranston - Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD) Area

Again, because the highest-rated hotels in this area only have 3 stars, there’s not a lot of room for changing the bidding criteria. Here’s the bidding process for this area:

“Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)” area only, 3-star

“Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)” and “East Providence – Seekonk ” areas, 3-star (since the latter doesn’t have 3-star hotels)

“Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)” area only, 2 1/2-star (or repeat 1st two bids for 3-star in 24 hours)

“Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)” area only, 2-star (or repeat bids for 3-star and/or 2 1/2-star in 24 hours)

“Cranston – Warwick – Providence Airport (PVD)” area only, 1-star (or repeat bids for 3-star and/or 2 1/2-star and/or 2-star in 24 hours)
Bidding For a Hotel in the Coventry – West Warwick Area

As for the PVD area, the highest-rated hotels in the Coventry – West Warwick area only have 3 stars. Thus the bidding process is similar:

“Coventry – West Warwick” area only, 3-star

“Coventry – West Warwick” and “East Providence – Seekonk ” areas, 3-star (since the latter doesn’t have 3-star hotels)

“Coventry – West Warwick” area only, 2 1/2-star (or repeat 1st two bids for 3-star in 24 hours)

“Coventry – West Warwick” area only, 2-star (or repeat bids for 3-star and/or 2 1/2-star in 24 hours)

“Coventry – West Warwick” area only, 1-star (or repeat bids for 3-star and/or 2 1/2-star and/or 2-star in 24 hours)

That’s all there is to it! I’d be very much obliged if you would post your winning bids, hotel names and reservation dates in the comments. This will help future visitors to determine their starting bids to save both money and time. Thank-you very much in advance for taking the time to help!
